Reduced Environmental Impact Coalescents for Modern Paint Formulations
In the world of water-based paints, coalescents play a vital role in ensuring the quality and durability of the final film. These auxiliary solvents help polymer particles merge during the drying process, allowing the paint to form a smooth, continuous layer. However, traditional coalescents often come with environmental drawbacks, particularly due to their volatile organic compound (VOC) content or high carbon footprint1.
As environmental regulations tighten and consumer expectations shift toward more sustainable products, the paint industry is undergoing a transformation. SEQENS is at the forefront of this change, offering innovative coalescent solutions that combine high technical performance with a strong commitment to environmental responsibility.
What is a Coalescent?
A coalescent is an additive used in water-based paint formulations to facilitate film formation. By lowering the minimum film formation temperature (MFFT), it ensures that the paint dries properly even under cooler conditions. This process is essential for achieving a uniform finish, good mechanical resistance, and long-term durability.
Traditional coalescents are typically derived from petrochemical sources and are known for their high VOC content and strong odor. In contrast, reduced environmental impact coalescents are biodegradable, low in VOCs2, and sourced from natural materials, offering a reduction in carbon footprint. These alternatives offer similar or even superior performance while significantly reducing environmental impact.
Why Seek Reduced Environmental Impact Alternatives?
The push for reduced environmental coalescents is driven by both regulatory and market forces. In Europe, the REACH regulation and Ecolabel certification set strict limits on VOC emissions in decorative paints. In the United States, the EPA and California’s CARB regulations impose similar constraints 3. Compliance with these standards is no longer optional, it’s essential for market access.
Beyond regulation, consumers are increasingly aware of the health and environmental implications of the products they use. They expect paints to be low-odour, non-toxic, and safe for indoor environments. Reduced environmental impact coalescents help meet these expectations while also enhancing brand reputation and aligning with corporate sustainability goals.
SEQENS Solutions: Tailor-Made Esters
To address these challenges, SEQENS has developed neo Coasol technology. This consists of four products designed to meet current and future legislation, whilst at the same time offering superior technical performance and improved efficiency compared to traditional coalescents:
These esters are characterized by high boiling points (around 280–290°C), are very low odour, and have excellent compatibility with a wide range of resins, including acrylic, vinyl, and hybrid systems. Being more efficient in lowering the MFFT, than traditional coalescents means that neo Coasol® technology offers further savings in environmental footprint as less is required in when formulating. They are not classified as hazardous, which simplifies labeling and handling, and they meet the requirements of most international environmental standards.
Neo Bio Coasol® and neo Bio Coasol® 290 are chemically identical to their petrochemical equivalents and offer a pathway to carbon footprint reduction with minimal development time, offering up to a 64% reduction in carbon footprint when compared to their petrochemical equivalents. This also enables customers to approve first regular grades of neo Coasol and then move later to the biosourced products, neo Bio Coasol, maintaining all the benefits of neo Coasol technology.
Our Technological Expertise Serving Performance
Behind these solutions lies SEQENS’ deep expertise in esterification and purification technologies. The company uses advanced distillation processes to ensure high purity and consistent quality across batches.
Each product undergoes rigorous quality control to ensure chemical stability, formulation compatibility, and compliance with customer specifications. This commitment to excellence ensures that SEQENS coalescents not only meet environmental standards but also deliver reliable performance in demanding applications.
Case Studies / Application Examples
One notable example is a wall paint formulated with neo Bio Coasol® 290. This product achieved zero VOC emissions, offered an odorless application experience, and has helped customers achieve Ecolabel certification. Feedback from customers highlighted the ease of integration into existing formulations and superior technical performance to traditional coalescents.
Such success stories demonstrate that sustainability and performance are no longer mutually exclusive. With the right technology and expertise, it is possible to create paints that are both environmentally responsible and technically robust.
SEQENS approach for more sustainability in the paints and coatings industries
The future of decorative paints lies in responsible innovation. Neo Coasol® technology not only offers regulatory compliance—they also offer a strategic advantage. SEQENS is committed to supporting its partners in this transition, offering tailor-made solutions that meet the highest standards of sustainability and performance.
If you are looking to develop next-generation paint formulations that align with environmental goals and market expectations, SEQENS is ready to collaborate. Together, we can shape a cleaner, safer, and more innovative future for the coatings industry.
